My God stuff thinkings

Institutionalization... some people love it.

Today I let my newly fixed rabbits out of their cage for their fresh life on our lawn as free roamers. I am always excited to watch them discover that the door is open to a big wide world of grass - you may guess where I am going with this.

Baggins, our possum colored bunny, was quite happy to explore by circling the outside of the cage, then going back inside and repeating this behavior. Soon he left for keeps to sniff out the clover on the hillside. Beauty, our black giant, spent three hours eating grass from the doorway before she ventured outside. Even now in the evening, she has returned to her cage for the night.

Yes, this is like us - when the door to real living is opened. We meet God in His majesty and things seem strangely changed; yet we struggle to grasp what freedom means because our old life is familiar, comfortable and just there.

It is only natural that we would fluctuate between the accustomed and the unaccustomed, mostly because we can hardly grasp how amazing the unaccustomed is!

Stephen and I struggled with this in a different way when we began to see the opened door from our traditional and partly impersonal experience of God.

8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces[a] of this world rather than on Christ. Colossians.

Christ is beyond tradition and elemental spiritual forces. He is the wilderness of green we can barely imagine from our perspective of known walls.

23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence. Colossians.

An appearance of wisdom can too easily prevent God’s name becoming known, and we have all lived within it at some time, before we knew the door had been opened. The going through the motions looks good, but has no effect on the heart and what happens in private.

If Jesus is the heart of a heart then this is what identifies the true outworking of wisdom and self-control. One of my favorite verses, ‘Delight in Him and He will give you the desires of your heart’, can be reworded as profoundly to: ‘Delight in Him and He will be the desire of your Heart’, or ‘Delight in Him, and His desires will be the desire of your heart.’

This is truly beautiful and marks a person with the ink of God’s joy. One cannot be morose when considering the depths of His unfathomable character; nor can a body be useless for His kingdom when our delight in Him becomes our desire as well. Our life’s workings from this position will be considered miraculous answers to prayer, when His ‘delight’ is our delight and we walk daily in that pleasure.

It is a mindset. It is knowledge. But mostly it has to be our experience; an experience springing from gratitude over our life saved from the pit of rotting dreams and helpless decayed hopes. Gratefulness from being freed from the cage of blackest death and being introduced to boundary less life!!

My heart goes wild when I am about to open a cage door to a rabbit. Often I will wait for a time when I can sit unhurriedly at the entrance and encourage them with my presence.

Imagine the pleasure God takes in seeing us walk through the barriers that limited our faith, or stymied our usefulness! Imagine His delight!!!

Kylie, I would be delighted to have my name as a side character in your next book. I am telling anyone who will listen that they too must read The Book of Told.

For the first time in many years I have found a book that I didn't want to put down. I wanted to just continue reading to find out where the story was going.
